Computer and PC Games

I was introduce to a brand new wii when I was 8 and since then I've got more and more games and consoles BUT more and more problems. I can't help playing when I shouldn't do, craving for more and it's got EVEN WORSE OVER THE YEARS. I still do it till this day and I'm desperate to stop but, I can't. I just can't get it out of my head and I'm in desperate need for help. It's also the same with Youtube. Any advice would be greatly apresiated. Chat to ya soon!

Presumably you are over 16 (forum rule)? Otherwise people can disclose information like that on their profile if they chose to. Pandoren is just trying to help as you would advise people different things at different ages.

Not sure what you meant by "rage quiting" ?

  • Firstly, I'd like to ask, what age are you?

Also, sorry I havn't made it clear, it's under control for the moment. What I want to achieve here is to get a positive solution in which it doesn't go flying out of control again and again and AGAIN.

I have plenty of friends at school which, to be honest, I gratefull for because I used to never have many so I'm privileged. Also, I have many other interests like trumpeting and table tennis.

I like the idea of 'life being a game', it's even more rage quiting than 'the impossible game' (I'm not very good at that sort of game)

    Thanks for your time

  • You don't say how old you are now? Still pretty young I'm guessing.

There is such thing as gaming addiction, although I doubt it is taken as seriously as other addictions like drink and drugs, but there are professionals out there who can help. At the age I suspect you are you'd obviously need your parents help with that, although there might be a therapist/counsellor at school you could talk to? Perhaps if they agree you have a serious problem they can help your parents to help you deal with it.

The things that are not so good about getting hooked on games.

It takes you away from getting on with real life

It stops you spending time on things that will earn you real money

It stops you from meeting real people who you want to be around. I know the other gamers are real people but it's too much like kindergarten playtime where you are all playing at some ultimately time passing activity that achieves nothing more than the passage of more time. (If you want to understand the passage of time then consult Proust!)

Games are just a way of avoiding real life, they are a bit like drugs (prescription or not) that hide problems but do nothing to actually tackle your underlying difficulties.

I've advocated that people should treat real life as a game. Why don't you spend your energy on trying to get to the next level in real life by learning how to be more confident with making eye contact or making conversation or learning how to tolerate the stupidity of so many aspects of the world without getting angry. There are lots of positive things to be won in real life that are worth much more effort than learning how to get to the next level in a game.

That's just my opinion, other opinions are available!

  • Thanks alot for the help.

To be honest, the big, BIG problem is Tanki. Let me explain...

I discovered it about 3 years ago and I didn't particularly like it then. But then it became more and more adictive and before you know it I was wanting to play it 24/7. That's when the problems started.

I started playing it when I wasn't allowed to and my parents got gradually crosser. Then, the game broke the computer. My parents then decided enough was enough and when  they got another computer, they said I wasn't allowed to play it anymore.

I was gutted. Not only it was by far my favourite game, I was just about to go competitive.

Since then, it's been horrible trying to force it out of my head. The bad thing is it causes me to do stupid things because I'm not thinking straight. HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!

  • Hi there. Here's a list of what I think is good about playing the game;

    • It's multiplayer/online/play with other people around the world
    • It's very tactical and forces you to think on your feet
    • Download AND any details are not required at all
    • I have lots of friends who play it
    • Requires skill, not money or luck
    • Well...I'm good at it. It may be weird but I get a feeling of self achievement when I know I'm better than lots of people (because usually I'm worse Smile )

Also, what I mean by going 'competitive' is paricipating in tournaments. I had formed a clan/team on the game and we were preparing to start facing other teams. I was excited, obviously, and it would of happened if the computer didn't break.

Also, thank you for trying to help me out. It helps alot knowing that people want to respond Smile

  • I don't know if I can help. I like playing some simple games like solitaire to relax, but I don't play the more complicated ones. Maybe writing down lists of what is good about playing the game, and what is bad about it would help? Also have you got problems that are making you unhappy in 'real life'?

Also what does it mean when you 'go competitive'. I don't know, sorry!

  • Hello im big fan of playing on games

i was like you during school years, after i come home from school thats all i did was play on my games

all i can say it helped me be in my own world which at that time i was actually better off being in my own world due to issues

but since you say you want to stop

you could try setting times and routine for yourself on how long to play for? Also do the same with youtube :)

sorry thats all i can think of how to deal with it
