Sensitivity

Hi all,

I would just like to ask a question to anyone with AS,

Does anyone else suffer with sensitivity to artificial light? By artificial I mean light that doesnt come from the sky or sun! Especially the yellowy lights. (Am strangely fine around white coloured artificial lighting.

It seems to make me feel anxious at times and if I get anxious around this type of light I see the light becoming brighter until the anxiety has worn off.

  • I was also brought up with flourescent lights. I wonder if early exposure helps one adjust to it?

  • I haven't been that badly affected by flourescent lights and our house has had then since I was born.

  • Hi all,

Glad to hear others are in the same boat as me with the fluoresent lighting and I wish there was a way of it not affecting us, what is it about those lights!

It does seem to cause anxiety its weird, not sure about anyone else but I find I am fine around the white coloured lights, they are the best, but definetely supermarkets and stuff they have horrible lights, and street lights and buses.

Is it just something that affects people with AS I wonder? because most people seem to be fine around the lighting, not get affected in any way and most of the time seem to completely be unaware of any significance of the yellowy intenseness!!!!

  • I can't stand bright fluorescent lights. They make me irritable, give me headaches and give me visual distortions like I'm tripping. I start thinking all sorts of crazy (you don't want to know), depressing thoughts under these lights but as soon as I'm away from them I feel fine. It's such a pain that so many workplaces have this type of lighting as standard as it makes it near-impossible for me to work in a lot of different jobs.

  • I really dislike fluorescent lighting, even the newer types, and cannot work under it. It makes me anxious, gives me a pain at the back of my eyes and blurred vision and headaches if I have to endure it for any length of time.

  • As a child at school if one of the flourescent tubes was flickering it made me feel nauseouse so I couldn't sit under it. I think sometimes others couldn't even see the flickering. (I think they were tubes that were soon going to stop working). I haven't noticed any problems with modern flourescent energy saving lights, but I do wonder if they are a problem without me realising.  I'd do tests on myself with different types (eg leds as well as flourescents) if I had the resources!  I do have 'daylight' flourescent bulbs in one room for my orchids and I've noticed they feel fresher than the ordinary room lights, but I don't want to put them in all the rooms as I have enough problems sleeping and am worried they'd worsen that!  Maybe you could try a daylight bulb and see if you like it?
