Can sensitivity to fireworks develop as a child gets older

For the last few years we have had domestic fireworks in our back garden. They are mostly low sound and two medium sound, our neighbour has children. who are sensitive to noise the same as my Son is.  She complained the fireworks dysregulated her child this year  she’s never complained in previous years.  I don’t know whether this complaint is genuine or not?

It may not be that the child has become more sensitive to the sound but that they are experiencing other stressers that make it easier for additional stimuli such as this to push them over the edge.

You now know about the fact that this is causing them problems so I think it speaks volumes that you are asking for advice about this, hopefully so you can accommodate their needs and be a better person for it. Thank you for this.

One thing you could consider is if the child and parent agree, why not get them some ear protection (those building site ear covers) and ask if they would be willing to light the first firework of the night - sort of make it an honoured position that you want them to accept.

This will make them feel involved and have a degree of control so it may then help them accept it as a thing they are part of and as such feel less overwhelmed. It can be similar to why a driver of a car rarely feels car sick while passengers can do - the element of control changes things.

One it starts it would be best to have a parent on standby to take them indoors while you pause the fireworks for a minute then resume when they are safely tucked away.

This seems a good option to build a better relationship and hopefully help them overcome this particular issue, plus helps build a connection with your neighbour.

    Only a thought.
