Can sensitivity to fireworks develop as a child gets older

For the last few years we have had domestic fireworks in our back garden. They are mostly low sound and two medium sound, our neighbour has children. who are sensitive to noise the same as my Son is.  She complained the fireworks dysregulated her child this year  she’s never complained in previous years.  I don’t know whether this complaint is genuine or not?

  • It's certainly possible for any given sound - such as fireworks - to dysregulate an autistic person (whether a child or an adult) at some times and not at others. As the NAS explains:

"Your sensitivity may vary over time, in different environments or due to other factors, such as your mental and physical health. For more information about this, read ‘Mixed and varying sensory experiences’ in the next section."

NAS - Autism and sensory processing

she’s never complained in previous years.

I'd also gently note that, just because your neighbour hasn't complained in previous years doesn't necessarily mean that your fireworks haven't previously caused issues for their child. It can take time for people to build the confidence to advocate for themselves or their children.
