One of my all time favs, and has been since I first saw it, is Independance Day. The first time I saw it I was at  home, it was dark, and I kept looking out the window to check for aliens!   

For Christmas, I know it's a bit Marmite, but I do like The Polar Express. I also always watch Arthur Christmas. 

Love most family Xmas films

For the most part I avoid anything that says its "family" orientated. I etiher don't get it, because my family is unlike any of the families shown, I ask awkward questions, like should social service be involved if a child is left alone in a house at xmas or any other time of year? Or I see whats coming telegraphed so far in advance that its actually painful to watch.
