Ambivalent about the display of 'mummies'

I'm watching a Dan Snow docu on ancient Egypt, and just seen Tutankhamen's corpse, now back in his tomb inside a glass case. My views have changed over the years. I can't help feeling sad at seeing his pathetic blackened face and feet; stripped of wrappings, golden mask and sarcophagi - and dignity. I know some museums are removing such exhibits, whilst others claim it is 'educative' to see these sights. I can't help thinking of 18th century freak shows, rather than medical collections for professionals.

What do you think? Are we disrespecting the dead or being over sensitive? Should these bodies be returned to their graves with their personal possessions, as their loved ones wished? And as we would wish? Can you imagine yourself being dug up after centuries and displayed for public view?

  • It's disrespect in my book. They wouldn't do it with Christian corpses, so why disinter and show those from other religions in museums? |Plus robbing the graves of grave goods. There's no reason why they can't carry out their tests behind closed doors with dur respoct and create replicas to show. Then, return the dead person to the same land they were buried in (or as close as possible) with their burial goods. Prefereably in a secret location, to prevent pilfering.
