Annonas

It's my favourite fruit.

Custard apples, sugar apples, soursop, asimina triloba (American pawpaw) and cherimoya. They ripen very fast and are best to eat when they are soft to touch. This can happen within 24 hours. That's why they are not available in supermarkets, as they spoil quickly at room temp.

There are other rare varities like rollinia (a yellow annona that tastes like lemon meringue), reticulata and ilama, which I would love to try, before I die. The latter two varieties can have red and pink flesh and tastes of raspberry yoghurt.

American pawpaw is very interesting, as we can grow the trees in our gardens in the UK and they will fruit every year and survive the winter.

Have you ever tried annonas and did you like any of them?

Like apples, each variety/tree has a different taste. I could eat them every day! :)

  • I hadn't heard of these (not that I'm a fruit fan).

Where can you buy them?  In ordinary supermarkets?

  • Hi B,

You can find them in Turkish and Asian supermarkets. I ate cherimoya for the first time this week and it was amazing. It was very sweet and tasted like icing sugar mixed with a tropical smoothie. The flesh is very juicy and soft. Soursop has a tropical fruit yogurt taste.

    This is a sugar apple,

    This is a cherimoya,

Cherimoya is about £2 each, but sugar apples and soursop are about £10 a kilo. I think cherimoya has the best taste.

    Thank you.

Unfortunately I don't live in a multicultural city and in fact, in the one I used to live in, I've never seen a Turkish supermarket.

However, it used to have an Asian one so next time I'm visiting I will look out for these.

    They sound delicious.
