Photography thread

mentioned the possibility of having a photography thread in another thread.

This can be a place to show your photos and discuss photography.

It doesn't have to be creative so anything from squirrels to ICM (intentional camera motion).

I will start with a squirrel when I can find him.

  • She was a formidable woman for sure.  The forts came a good deal after Napoleon, built after a Royal Commission into the defence of the country.  It was recognised that the dockyard in Plymouth was vulnerable to a landward attack and so a ring of forts were built from the Cornish coast around the northern part of Plymouth and back to the Devon coast, ending at Bovisand.  None of them fired a shot in anger, though some were re-purposed for anti-aircraft defence during WWII.  As far as I know there's only one open to the public as a museum and that's in Plymouth not far from Derriford Hospital.  Most of the others have been converted into other things like luxury flats, a wedding venue, a diving centre, and other non-military uses.  There is one still used by the army in Whitsand Bay, which has a live fire rifle range.

The breakwater in Plymouth Sound is Napoleonic; in fact some French POW's were used in it's construction, I believe.  They were housed in Dartmoor Prison, which I also believe they had a hand in building part of.  If you have a spare few million down the back of the settee, I hear that Drakes Island is up for sale!  Joy

If history is your thing, try and visit South Yard in the Dockyard.  There are more Grade I listed buildings per square mile than anywhere else in the UK.  It has a good museum and lots of very interesting buildings, including the Ropery, which has an execution chamber at the end of it.  How much of South Yard is now open to the public I don't know, but most of it is no longer used by the MoD.  There is a scheme, run by English Heritage, I believe, where normally closed historic buildings are opened to the public for a day once a year.  So, you may be able to explore some of those through that scheme.

  • From the looks of the ferry, I would think it’s the same one! I want to start exploring the Napoleonic  Forts dotted along the area. That’s quite a route march your mother took you on.
