White Noise Generators

Does anyone else use a white noise generator to fall asleep at night? I don’t as much nowadays, but for years I did because the neighbour had dogs that could get noisy during the day, and I couldn’t relax in bed in case they started. As it turned out, they weren’t too bad later on, but it was the threat of barking or any other noises, including talking from the living room downstairs, right beneath my bed, that kept me on edge. Also, if I ever have to go into the hospital, I make sure to take one or two sources of white noise devices with a headphone socket or a radio that can produce white noise by tuning to static.

  • I am presuming white noise is like the hum of a fan. My son uses that. I find that kind of noise keeps me awake, I think due to the hum. However gentle music can help me get to sleep. When I was a child I had a children's clock with a loud click. I found it difficult getting to sleep without it, but it had the opposite effect for anyone who came to stay.

I understand the need to have something to cover up background noises. I can sometimes be disturbed by the quietest sound if I don't know the source.

  • It’s like people who live near the sea; they find it hard to sleep when staying somewhere quiet. I suppose their minds have become accustomed to drifting off with the sound of waves in the background.
