What actually is Artificial Intelligence?

AI is a common topic of conversation, but I've started wondering about what it actually is. I found an interesting article:

https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/artificial-intelligence/what-is-artificial-intelligence-ai/

The article states "Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology that enables machines and computers to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence."

And that it "Simulates human intelligence through learning and reasoning"

Is simulating intelligence actually intelligence?

Also, can it ever "think outside the box"? For example, I recently moved into a new flat with a very small bathroom, and nowhere to hang towels. There is only a small space next to the sink and a towel rail will not fit. So I bought a coat stand - an upright pole on a stand with 6 hooks around it - on which towels can be hung, and it solved the problem. Could an AI have thought of this?

  • I see it as the new industry hope or hype. Something which companies individuals have actually had access to for years. Retail ai is becoming more limited, you are having to pay more and more to receive the same level of intelligence - as intelligence is pushing frontiers it has to keep moving you’re going to be pressured into buying the latest ai model.

I just feel like its also being used as a veil for other activity, I mean once data centres are built the actual cost is very low. Other than replacing chipboards every few years. Largely its the mysticism that very few people understand what it is, so it becomes more and more expensive for consumers (and the big companies monopolise), Its mostly repackaging though, and reliance upon consumer laziness not to seek answers and information elsewhere. Mostly the future is going to be built on this wanting the latest thing.  I'm not sure the companies building advanced ai models actually know what it is.
