Maybe Scam calls

I've been getting a lot of calls recently,  all different numbers that I don't recognise.

I categorise them into three groups.

  1. It's a missed call that stops before I get a chance to answer.
  2. I answer and they hang up immediately.
  3. I answer and a voice tells me to add this number to whatsapp.  And they hang up.

Can someone explain to me the purpose of these calls.

  • I never answer. Your #1 tells me it's a scam call. Sometimes my phone recognises it as a scam call, sometimes it doesn't; it makes no difference to me. I don't answer unless it's a number in my contact list, in which case it has a name attached to the number. If they leave no message, I give them 24 hours and then report and block them.

Scammers tend to use a different number every time they call. Some are reported to the website Who Called Me and many aren't these days, because they don't use the same number. Sometimes they spoof a real number belonging to an innocent person and maybe they use mine for that purpose. Sometimes they spoof the number of banks and other organisations. It's simple: no message, no call back. If they leave a message pretending to be from an organisation, I ring that organisation to check using the phone number on the organisation's website, never the number on my phone (as that will lead straight to the scammer.)
