Maybe Scam calls

I've been getting a lot of calls recently,  all different numbers that I don't recognise. 

I categorise them into three groups.

  1. It's a missed call that stops before I get a chance to answer.
  2. I answer and they hang up immediately. 
  3. I answer and a voice tells me to add this number to whatsapp.  And they hang up.

Can someone explain to me the purpose of these calls.

Parents

  • My mom is getting absolutely swamped with the exact same call, they hang up within seconds, zero chance to pick up in time. Just ignore them, I've traced back a few  numbers for my mom using Who-called.co.uk, everyone in the comment section of those numbers says when they get through it's the usual spam rubbish involving insurance in a thick foreign accent. 

    Anyway, years ago the purpose of silent calls was if the person called (you, the receiver in this case) picked up it was added to a database of live numbers. Not sure if this is the case today though.
