Treatment for autism that may cause death

I came across the following two papers on risperidone that is sometimed used to treat autism.

Maybe we have doctors here who can comment?

  • My understanding is that this is only used for people with autism that show high levels of irritability and aggression. I've no idea what the stats are for it being prescribed for autistic individuals but in my time working in SEN schools I've met one child that was prescribed an antipsychotic. I'm not sure whether it was risperidone but I think it's likely that it was. On this basis I assume it's not a very common prescription for autism, at least in kids. In comparison, a high number were prescribed antidepressants and ADHD meds for co-occuring conditions.

    I cannot comment medically but I'd assume if it were prescribed, a medical professional would have concluded that the benefits out weighed the risks and they would be checked and monitored accordingly.
