Does anyone else obsess over plotholes in movies?

Does anyone else whenever they see a movie start to fixate on details that don't make any sense? I was just thinking about the Disney movie Wish, which already isn't considered a great movie by the masses. But if you really think about it, the movie has a HUGE plothole, as well! Specifically, Asha's grandfather's wish.

So, if you've seen or know about Wish, you know that the film revolves around King Magnifico taking people's wishes and granting them in wish granting ceremonies. Asha's Grandfather's wish is to "inspire" people, without any specific details. Do you see what's wrong with this?

1. It's a very simple wish to fulfil without any magic wish granting ceremonies. Literally anything can be done to inspire someone, even if it's just telling them they're good at what they do!

2. King Magnifico was the one that accept to take this wish to be potentially granted in the first place, and yet suddenly he has a problem with it when Asha points the wish out to him. Did he just accept the wish without looking at it the first time?

3. By reacting the way he does to the wish, King Magnifico is inadvertently granting the wish by being inspired by it to become a villainous, paranoid tyrant.

  • They irritate me. So does forcing the character to act out-of-character for plot purposes. At that point, I generally lose interest and stop watching. And the thing that really gets me is loose ends. It's like: couldn't you be bothered??? After 20 years of writing, I see all the sloppiness. I took pains never to leave holes or loose ends, and to enable the plot to be governed by the characters. Grr.

    I once told one of my students who loves Game of Thrones that Tyrion was a sleight of hand because he's a modern man in a medieval world. yes, I know he's there to give modern audiences a 'way in' by providing us with a modern commentary on the madness, but it's still a form of cheating, in my eyes. Still, that's not as bad as some devices.

    Modern UK/US TV/movies seem obsessed with action as the main driver. No finesse. 

  • Yes, poor storytelling is really annoying and really puts me off a movie if it's got more holes than a sieve. 

    If it's a small things, I'll watch the movie and just remember them, but it's great to discuss it after, it's part of watching a movie for me. My son is the same and we can discuss all the holes together. That and if there is a sequel, what the plot might be.

    I haven't seen wish, but heard the story wasn't the best. We just watched Dune part 2, but neither me nor my husband were that keen despite being big Sci Fi fans, as it felt rushed with lots of holes. I need to read the book, I think that would be better.

  • I haven't seen Wish, but they add plot armour to make movies more digestible to the general audience. They want the masses to watch it. 

  • No and it really annoys me when people start going on about them and continuity errors, most of the time I just want to watch and enjoy and not take it all too seriously.

    Its the same with people who have to keep rewinding bit to watch again because they've spent so long obsessing over a percieved error they really have lost the plot it makes everyone else lose the plot too because somethng that should last an hour takes two because of all the faffing about.
