Hate and unconstitutional thinking taking over

I know, nobody wants to talk about politics and that‘s not what I‘m here to do. 
There was a pretty defining vote in one of the Bundesländer of Germany and the results are… Well, today I am ashamed to be German.

I do not get why people vote for a party that is officially deemed "right-wing extremist“ and wants to destroy the pillars of democracy for personal profits and ideologies. 
Sorry to dampen the mood, but as someone that needs the world to stay open minded, I worry. I cried this morning and I fear for the future. My sense of justice screams for me to get away while I am to start my six years of university soon. The future seems to be a Germany where I do not want to live and right now I honestly do not know what to do.

How do you deal with the world getting more hateful and narrow-minded? What helps you to see things in perspective (preferably a perspective that doesn‘t make me weep)?

  • I  agree with the observations.

    What I do personally is to carefully allocate some money (when I can) to specific causes or organisations with which I share values.

    For example, funding independent media and investigative journalists.

    Donating small amounts, when we are able to, can make a difference in the long run, and across many individuals.

    There is also activism or volunteering that we can do to help. But I think the financial support is sometimes under discussed, which is why I mention that one.

    I think that an another aspect is to have statistics at hand (normally the ones from the governments are accurate enough) to show the situation is different to what most right wingers believe. But of course, this usually doesn't work.

    Another option is leaving the country. It is extreme, but at certain times I think it is right.

    Some disagree, and there are also good reasons to disagree.

    I‘m honestly at a point where I consider my options for the future and one of them absolutely includes leaving the country.
