I’ll try my best to be neutral about this, but being American that’s kind of tricky. Sorry I can’t watch the documentary you posted at the moment, since I am at work and can’t watch something without my coworkers realizing that I’m goofing off for a moment lol.
I don’t know if it is as wide-spread in the UK as it is here, but it’s becoming really terrifying how common it is becoming for people to seriously believe that all of 9/11 was instigated by the American government. From what I’ve seen - and hey, I could be wrong - there is a major lack of evidence pointing towards it being an inside job. Everything I’ve seen people pose as evidence tends to be circumstantial or things that can be explained otherwise. What’s so scary is I’ve heard the conspiracies from both far-left and far-right individuals.
The far-left want to blame the Republican Bush administration for manufacturing a “Pearl Harbor” event to get all Americans on board to wage war in the Middle East. I don’t quite understand the far-right point of view, but my guess is that they want to believe that the socialist “Deep State” instigated 9/11 as an attempt to destabilize the Bush administration. The fact that both sides agree to some degree that 9/11 was an inside job is a horrifying prospect to me.
Here’s the best examples of evidence I have heard supporting the conspiracies:
1. The side of the Pentagon that was struck was practically empty due to renovations. The government did this to essentially make themselves look innocent, yet also do as little damage to military intelligence as possible.
2. George Bush had odd bank transactions before the event, which led to his investments not suffering too horribly afterwards (I haven’t seen this evidence myself, I’ve just heard it mentioned many times)
3. The support columns were built with a melting point so high that it would take incendiaries or explosives to reach those temperatures.
4. There was a lot of weird reactions by news crews and witnesses immediately following the crashes. Some witnesses were even insistent on there being missiles instead of planes.
But then here’s some of the evidence I’ve heard refuting the conspiracies:
1. No matter how skillful the pilots were, it would be practically impossible for them to hit a pinpoint target like a particular section of the Pentagon that is empty. The Twin Towers were plausible to hit, obviously, but a certain sector of the Pentagon to minimize casualties/damage? Less likely. Also, the potential of causing too much damage to the Pentagon would have been a HUGE risk for the government. All it would have taken would have been the plane moving a few degrees in the wrong direction.
2. You do not need to completely reach the melting point of metal for it to soften enough to bend. Thus jet fuel could burn hot enough over time to damage the support columns even without exceeding the melting point.
3. There are no - ZERO - whistleblowers I am aware of that have come forward in 25 years saying they knew of or were involved in a plot designed by the government. Think of the sheer number of custodians and maintenance workers in the World Trade Center the operatives would have needed to work around or pay off in order to plant explosives. That’s not even taking into consideration office staff and visitors. There is no way the government could enact such an operation without lots of hands involved, and each individual person involved would pose a higher risk of a whistleblower.
4. People say weird things when terrified or grieving. I’ve watched footage from every major news source that day and most of them tried their hardest not to jump to conclusions about anything without official notice. However, they could not prevent average civilians on the air who barely saw and certainly did not expect what happened from guessing details like what kind of planes were involved. Ultimately, eye-witness testimony was not nearly as reliable as we would like it to have been.
5. If the government really wanted to instigate a “21st Century Pearl Harbor,” they could have involved targets that would have less significant economic impact. Destruction of the Statue of Liberty, for example, would have been a massively symbolic loss with fewer casualties and practically no economic loss apart from tourism. Wiping out the World Trade Center and damaging the Pentagon would have been wildly risky moves economically and militarily for the American government to invest in.
Sorry for the rant, but it really worries me how rampant the misinformation is here in the USA. My question is: Are these conspiracies as widespread in the UK as it is over here?

The note that younger demographics are more likely to believe in the conspiracies makes A LOT of sense. Most of the folks I have heard the conspiracies from via word of mouth have been people my age or older, but I can totally understand the possibility of generations that didn’t see it happen being more easily convinced of an inside job.
