A moan about supermarket fruit

Every week, I buy what looks like a delicious bowl of healthy fruit. Several days later, it's either hard as a bullet or full of tiny annoying flies. If I want to eat fruit immediately, I'm forced to buy expensive, 'ready to eat' fruits. When did this happen?? For decades, I bought and ate fruit immediately - sometimes snaffling a piece or two on the way home from the supermarket [does anyone else do this, with fruit and pastries?]. You almost have to babysit pears and plums for example - I'll swear they wink at each other, before slumping into an unhealthy-looking puddle. The only ones who don't mind are birds, who love my cast-off grapes, nectarines, plums and bananas.
