Retro foods

I think this might have been covered before, but .. I found some recipes for toast toppers, which are sadly no longer on sale. The nearest dish is Welsh rarebit but toast toppers have a nice spicy kick.

Have you any favourite retro dish - either stuff you can buy or ones that no longer exist? Does anyone remember Sainsbury's breakfast slices which were a long oblong tasting of bacon?

  • Lol I was the opposite. As a kid I HATED yolk, but loved the white. I can stand yolk now, but eggs in general are less appealing to me nowadays.

  • I thought I was the only one. I found the white of a fried egg too slimy for years.

It's still only the yolk hard for me.

  • I just ate hard fried egg yolk

You, too? I thought I was the only one. I found the white of a fried egg too slimy for years. I can do it now, but only with other things, like hash browns or toasted soda bread.

  • Soon it’s going to be called “The Pond of America” soon!

    Or 'Trump Pond'.

  • we call the Atlantic Ocean 'the pond' when referring to the States.

Yup! That one I know. But remember: Soon it’s going to be called “The Pond of America”!

  • I appreciate the response and I’m sorry if that was asking too much. I had a feeling it was going to be similar to my experience, and I guess that gut feeling was right!

Interesting that you are the same - avoiding foods must I should think be a sign of autism in childhood.

It wasn't asking too much - I'm always happy to answer questions and if I'm not I will let you know.

Wishing you a goodly day over 'the pond'.  In case you don't know the expression we call the Atlantic Ocean 'the pond' when referring to the States.

ps.  Anything else you want to ask on this subject is fine too.

  • My mum actually spoke to a doctor about this (which is surprising as she wasn't caring in other ways) and he said to just give me what I would eat as at least I was eating.

According to my mom, this is EXACTLY what happened with me, too!

  • Why was it so bad eating food your mom made? Was it that she was a bad cook, she only served food you disliked, or was it more of due to a bad relationship outside of the meals?

It was the same as you ie only eating a very few foods.

In those days (1960s/early 1970s) there was much less choice of foods available eg. fast food, pre packaged food and ready meals.

    Also, we were poor.

My mum bought vegetables and meat and actually it would have been quite a healthy diet if I would have eaten it.

I hated vegetables, fruit and meat (similar still now) and there were few alternatives.

So, I just ate hard fried egg yolk and home made chips for years.

I’m just curious, because my rationale for being so thin growing up was that I was so picky that I once went through a period of ONLY eating ice cream sandwiches. So it wasn’t particularly due to my mother in particular (honestly, she probably did the best she could. I think I actually caused her a great deal of grief with how picky I was…)

  • Do you mind if I ask some clarifying questions, or would you rather leave it at that? I’m totally fine with respecting your privacy if this is not a topic you’d like to elaborate on.

Sorry. As I don't get notifications I missed this question.

    Any questions are fine.
