New computer going back to the shop

Sorry if anyone finds my tech problems boring, you can just stop reading and do something else.

I tried my new computer again this afternoon and I still can't get on with it, even simple things like changing the font size seem to be non existant as well as turning the sound off, I dont' want horrible noises being played to me all the time, especially when it's bombarding me with things like store your stuff on cloud, sync up your other devices. I ended up telling to it eff off and I don't have any other effing devices.

It did let me on here though which is an improvement, I can't get rid of the automatic spell checker either, I'm sure it makes the keyboard not recognise random letters just so it can give me a red wiggly.

  • Yes I can understand the difficulty with someone not understanding coming, that would add to your frustrations. But hopefully if the computer can just be set up to your liking, it'll be easier for you.

  • That sounds a nightmare. I have had issues answering my previous phone. I missed a lot of calls, some important. I ask people to call on landline where possible. I also manage to turn the ring down somehow. I had to practise which way to swipe to answer many times.

  • Yeah, but first you've got to find the button which I couldn't on the first one and the second one it wouldn't stay on long enough to find anything.

I wish they'd do the simple option right form the start and not make you jump through hoops all the time

  • I couldn't find how to switch it on, the second, I couldn't work out how to answer a call on, the screen would just stay black.

It is possible to fix all this crap but you first have to figure out how to fix it.It would help if they made them easy from the get go.

When I got a Sony smartphone (second hand) a while back, I couldn't figure out how to switch it off. I had to Google it. Turned out you have to do some weird combination of pushing various buttons which would never be obvious. But you can change it to "press and hold down main button, tap screen to confirm".

  • The place I bought it from has said they'll try and sort it out for me. I hope I get the nice bloke rather than the one who gives off headmaster vibes and asks questions and dosen't listen to the answer before telling his answer.

  • Could you get someone to come and set it up to suit your needs/preferences? They would be able to do things like turn off the sound and spell checker so you don't have to worry about them. Either someone you know that is good at tech or pay someone that knows what they are doing if you can afford to?

  • I understand your frustration. I bought this laptop off the guy I'd used for 7 years and it won't load Windows 11 updates - which is why I bought it. I am so annoyed it appears he's been overcharging and overselling me for years. It's so hard these days to find someone honest and reliable.

Curry's are not so good now [despite all those annoying adverts] and they do repairs off site, so you don't know who is doing what. I dislike buying any new technology now - they are being far too clever rather than selling goods that customers like us want - ie to replace old with similar new. My heart sinks whenever I buy a new kitchen appliance, instead of looking forward to it as I used to do.

  • This new laptop is reconditioned, bought from a local shop, I think its the operating system that the problem, it wants me to do things I can't, like link up to other devices, I don't have any, and to back up my documents, photos and music on the cloud, I don't have any.

I don't have a smart phone, I don't know how to even start using them and I have tried, the first one I tried I couldn't find how to switch it on, the second, I couldn't work out how to answer a call on, the screen would just stay black. I went to the shop to find out what was going on and the women told me to pop in any time and they'd help me answering it. I asked her if she thought it would still being ringing by the time I'd driven 20 miles, found somewhere to park and then waited whilst they were dealing with other customers? She looked at me like I was being stupid! The screen wouldn't stay switched on long enough for me to find where anything was, it was like 25 seconds and then it would switch off.

I use firefox which the new operating system dosen't like, it keeps refusing to load it and I have to click on the icon several times.

  • I can't get on with computers anymore evej phones are too much sometimes

Computers to keep are just something you. Might use at work I find windows to be very bland yet confusing at the same time

  • My new phone has a lot of things like that. I still have my old laptop which just had an updated system put in it. If you have anyone in your area who does this or sells second hand laptops you might have less unhelpful things.
