In defence of vanilla

I've noticed in recent years that "vanilla" as become a descriptior for plain and boring and maybe a bit bland. I want to ask why is that a bad thing? A proper vanilla custard is a wonderfull thing and versatile, you can have it hot or cold, even have it as soup if it takes your fancy. Is vanilla ice cream boring? I say no, it's actually one of my favourites.

I love spicy food and strong flavours, but you need something plain to balance flavours, hense rice with curry or chilli and I resent my choices being seen as bland.

Even worse is the use of the word to describe someone who's sexual preferences are simple, not everyone likes swinging from the chandeliers or not all the time.

So can we reclaim vanilla as the subtle and delicious thing it is when handled well?
