New Spider-Man movie has a serious villain problem... (SPOILERS)

I recently watched Spider-Man Brand New Day, and BOY do I have some thoughts, especially regarding Jean Grey.

So, the film after the third act tries to portray her as a victim, making her out to be a character the audience should feel sympathy for. However, I really don't think she deserve said sympathy. She has actively endangered and even killed people without a second thought and has done some pretty awful things throughout the movie's runtime. "You're not a killer" says Peter Parker. AHEM! *points to the scene where she gets some random guy ran over by a car, gets The Punisher to shoot those two Damage Control guards and drops MJ off the side of a building*

I get they were trying to make a morally grey character, but having a character do awful, unforgivable acts and then telling the audience they should feel sorry for them doesn't make them morally grey. It just makes them evil, but with a tragic backstory.

She didn't deserve to be let off scott-free at the end of the film. She should've been put into prison or something.

  • I get where you're coming from and I guess no she shouldn't have been let off Scott free. However, she wasn't the true villain of the film. Her sister was taken and experimented on until she died by people who were supposed to be supportive. She was left with nothing and noone apart from her ability. Unfortunately, this led to her ability channeling in an unhealthy way and her desperate need to save her sister made her become unhinged. Whilst this doesn't undo the bad she went on to do, I think the really point was that she wasn't the ultimate villain. It was those that were experimenting on people with powers that were truly the villains.
