Say you were marooned on a tropical island

The plane crashed on the island and no one else survived. You had plenty of supplies on the plane. You were off the grid/radar and they thought you drowned.

It was a rich paradise, full of life.

You would have to hunt wild boar and catch fish if you wanted meat. There would be tropical fruit if you wanted it. There would be no internet.

I think most would want to go home, back to the easy convenience of suburban life.

I think I would suffer at first and would want to be found. I would stay if I could.

You would feel so alive in survival mode.

Do you think you would survive in this situation?

Honestly, I  think I would die within a week. I have no survival skills. I don't know how to fish. The wild boars will probably kill me instead.

    I'd have a go at using a bit of broken window to concentrate the sunlight to start a fire.

  • I’ve watched survival programmes and understand the theory of survival in the wild, but actually surviving in an unknown environment would be a very challenging. 

    I don’t think I could kill a wild boar even if it was standing still in front of me.

    I would have a go at lighting a fire, making a shelter, finding fresh water to boil and fishing. 

  • Lol like TheCatWoman I wouldn’t last long. Not because of lack of internet or isolationism, but more so due to lacking any and all survival skills. I’d end up doing something stupid like stepping on a sharp rock with bare feet and immediately die lol.

    I was in Cub Scouts as a kid, but being that there was no scout leaders remotely near my farming town we were led by a lady who never went through any scouting experiences herself. We just did arts and crafts for a couple years until the management for the Scouts found out and shut her little art operation down lmao. So no, I have ZERO survival skills.

  • I have most of the skills needed. I could survive till I was rescued I think. Depends on how many poisonous things there were.

    I'd try and scavenge things from the plane. Shelter and water are key. Fire is a good thing to have but not that easy to create particularly if it is damp. Some sort of source from the plane would make it a lot easier. Doing it with sticks and a bow is hard.

    Fishing is easier with a line than a sharp stick. But I guess trial and error and necessity would help.

    A boar is risky. You don't want to get injured. Maybe a pit with sharpened sticks would work.

  • I don't eat meat or fish and I don't like tropical fruit and a tropical island would be to hot for me and I'd run out of books way to quickly

  • Assuming I had at least a stout knife with me, I think I would be OK. Shellfish are easily gathered, and I used to free-dive so, sharks permitting, I could dive for shellfish and crabs etc. I could make a reasonable bow and arrows. I know my way around animal anatomy and could fairly quickly work out the behaviour and habits of potential food animals. Yes, I believe that I could survive, so long as the bites of the local mosquitoes didn't give me any disease or a really bad reaction. Given suitable dry wood for friction-type ignition I think a fire would be doable - a combination of knife and flint would be easier though.

  • I have spent extended periods with no internet connection or only using the internet for streaming and downloading 

    When you go back to NOT using the internet the ajustment time is longer then getting used to using it again but it's doable in fact o used to fill my nights with Freeview tv and DVDs and books and foe thr most part it was nice but with how the world is now and I like to game internet is a necessity and it's hard to only use it to game. Although that's my aim eventually (although using it for tv maybbecome my only option

    Ah, you are very kind! I'm looking forward to reading other responses. Its been very quiet on here - probably everyone trying to cope with the heat.

    Well I just wanted you to know that if we survived together on this island, I would share my fish with you. I guess I would have to catch double the amount to make sure your belly was full.

    I would prefer to be alone, but I would cater for you. 

  • I like the idea in principle, but doubt I could catch and kill game. Fruit might lead to intestinal problems. I read Robinson Crusoe but was never fired enough to think of myself in that situation. I prefer to live a solitary life in the middle of civilisation, which is a bit puny but I am being honest. Interesting question, though. Makes you think about the things you already have and don't really appreciate.
