I get a bit freaked out and don't like it

Athletics wear for professional sportswomen, why is it always a vest and knickers? I get that not having a load of fabric floating around is more comfortable and helps you move faster, but are there any track and field sports were women are more covered? Men get to wear longer shorts and tops, except in gymnastics.

It weirds me out and I don't know why, is it partly the sexism of women being uncovered more than their male counterparts? Is it that I find humans with no or few clothes don't look right somehow? I'm not against nudity and nor do I think I'm prudish. I think it's one of those weird autistic things who's roots probably started with something so tiny and inconsequential as to not be noticed, but like a weed, had grown rampantly through my psyche.

  • It's just sexism. Many men prefer women as sex objects. If you look back at tennis costumes for women, they used to be modest - although those long skirts must have really got in the way! I know women in sports are fighting it, these days, but those damned dress codes are designed by men for men.

    It is ultimately about money. Even if the competitors are amateur and there is no prize money, it costs something to organise, run and provide medals and staff. This requires advertisers and TV, which depends on eyeballs. Whether it is reasonable is not the issue, I assume traditionally it worked.

    Athletics is not a useful activity, so it is about entertainment, which means viewers. Else it is just a hobby or pass time.

    Maybe the real answer is large female viewing figures for female athletics, with people practically dressed. But I don't know if that works.
