The happiness of small things

There are lots of books on the theme of small things that bring happiness. What are yours, past, present or imagined? You can have more than three but I was thinking of Desmond's thread!

Here are some of mine:

1. planning a garden project then seeing it through to completion, over weeks or months

2. sitting outside when it's quiet with a cup of tea, watching clouds scud past

3. sliding into bed just after I've just changed the sheets - the scent and the feel of crisp clean cotton

  • It is interesting that once we reflect or think deeply about the small things that bring joy, their significance increases.  For me the small things are those things that make life fulfilling. Earlier this week I saw damselflies on the river, fluttering with their gossamer wings this brought much joy.

I think happiness is indeed the art of noticing. You have to work at it but it becomes second nature after a while. I like to record things I'm grateful for in my daily journal, which helps me focus. Things like a gentle breeze however fleeting or when a lovely insect lands on your hands or when the neighbour's cat wanders into my house just for a stroke.
