The happiness of small things

There are lots of books on the theme of small things that bring happiness. What are yours, past, present or imagined? You can have more than three but I was thinking of Desmond's thread!

Here are some of mine:

1. planning a garden project then seeing it through to completion, over weeks or months

2. sitting outside when it's quiet with a cup of tea, watching clouds scud past

3. sliding into bed just after I've just changed the sheets - the scent and the feel of crisp clean cotton

  • I like a few transitions that happen in nature. They may not be small things, but it's the only thing I could come up with.

    1. The transition from a nice day into a storm. Nature quiets down, as if pondering about the weather, and people slowly retreat back home. Then the rain comes, you can sit in a bench under a tree to watch the storm unfold, and feel the temperature and the air changes. If this happens after draught, there is also petrichor, a smell I quite like. There are few or no car sounds, and only wandering pedestrians (that is, fewer "interruptions").

    2. The transition from night to day, when birds start singing (keeping it short to compensate for the rant above).

    3. And then there are the opposite of both cases above, as well.

(In some of these cases, I noticed spiders collect their web (they recycle), but I'm unsure whether this is fully regular, or even species-dependent.)

  • The feel of brushed cotton.
Laying in bed and rubbing my hot feet on the cool sheets.
