Autism and dementia

Does anyone have experience of a probable autistic parent developing dementia? I can’t work out whether I should be trying to get a medical assessment when I’ve been told to look after myself and let 85yr parent look after themselves!

  • I asked the GP to assess a parent who was likely autistic and exhibiting dementia like behaviours, but they wouldn’t come out.

    The GP was very sympathetic but couldn’t see the parent unless they requested a visit. Eventually the parent agreed to a GP visit and afterwwrds they were assessed by a psychiatrist.

    You are in a horrible situation but at least if you can speak to your GP you will have a better idea of your position.
