Bees having feelings

I saw this report and it makes me think of two things.

  • One is cool that scientists can identify different facial expressions on bees!
  • Two that it's sad that it takes science this long to see what people notice in everyday life!

So many people deny that animals have feelings (pet owners will know their companions feelings intimatly), and can't imagine other life forms like insects expressing preferences and reacting to liking/not liking things.

How will we be able to communicate with alien life if we keep assuming humans are the only ones that can do/feel things that we don't understand life even on our own planet?

But I love the idea of a bee licking it's lips when it has something tasty!

  • Wow, how amazing. Trouble is, will I have to feel guilty if a squish an insect that's just bitten me? I already wonder, after hearing vegetables have consciousness, if i'll have to apologise to it when I eat a carrot Flushed.  Perhaps knowledge will come to haunt everything we do.

  • I think it's more an appreciation of the natural world, and not taking things for granted. Being connected and part of the world, and also feeling the wonder of it all.

During the last heat wave, I saw a bumble bee on a footpath, looking overheated in it's little fluffy jacket. So I proffered it a leaf, and it climbed on, and I put it near some flowers and it climbed on them for a drink.

Sometimes you might hit a fly buzzing over your food yes, but sometimes we help the little creatures too and it's cool to know they appreciate it!
