Fallout from recent heatwave

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone else is currently dealing with the consequences of last week's heatwave? It's been really hard for me, in terms of intense stress from how unusual the situation was, worrying for my loved ones and people suffering the most from the extreme heat, and also because of the sensory overload it created. I felt in a near-meltdown state for a few days and really irritable.

I've noticed I've been inexplicably really tired and struggling to focus on my work this week, although temperatures are now lower and comfortable. I was wondering if some of you are also dealing with this.

  • I definitely took several days to start to feel normal again after the temperatures dropped. I panic when the heat's meant to go crazy (or when any severe weather is forecast, frankly) but this usually means at least that the house is prepped and I have bottles of ice in the freezer, plenty of cold water in the fridge, I open all the windows early, then shut them before the heat rises, then later shut all the curtains once the sun has come around. We also have a swamp cooler now, which is a fan that you put water and ice packs in, which is very helpful.

In 2022 when there was the crazy heat, I got really ill (drifting into what previous diagnoses have led me to believe is psychosis but I'm now suspecting is ASD overwhelm - goodness knows, maybe it's both), and I have a dread of that happening again if I can't stay on top of managing the heat.

(I also get really angry when people start "it's just summer"-ing, "stop all the drama!"-ing, etc. (People don't say this to me, I see it on the media.))

  • There are people who think it right to criticise anything that affects others but not them. If only people could accept that we are not all the same.
