Non verbal so can’t be assessed for Autism

Hi everyone,

I’m new here, I was diagnosed with ADHD 2 years ago I’’ve had bouts of being non verbal since childhood and have been on the waiting list for an assessment for autism from my GP since 2022. I’ve been kicked off the list as I can’t complete the assessment as  you need to speak. No help are support from any services but been gaslit and directed to mental health services who have said they can’t do anything. I’m unemployed so can’t afford private. NHS seems to be a massive contradiction. Unfortunately I’ve been alienated for my teen son but I can see history repeating itself for him. Frustrated is a too weak word to express the system of this process.

any advice would be gratefully appreciated

  • You sound perhaps selectively mute as have periods when you do speak. If so could you not have filled the form for what happens when you speak. You could email if you go back on the referral list and let them know that you may need adaptions for being non verbal predominantly and see what they say. May be they could move you up the queue as did wait for 4 years and tell them you have done your time waiting. Children can be assessed if they are non verbal and I have read this is possible for adults to, at least in some trusts.

    Hi Rachel, I agree, the selective mutism was to start. Now it’s becoming an everyday thing. All this has been explained to Gp’s and ND services in my area including cass who keep referring me to MH services who can’t help. I have also complained to pals and asked why I’m still in the same position as 2022 when first referred. They directed me also to MH. So round in circles I go. No help, no support but hopefully my local MP can resolve this and look into why this is happening.
