Increasing Autism Awareness?

What would you say would be the best way to increase Autism Awareness?
It seems to me that unless you have been diagnosed yourself or know someone with the condition then that is how you become educated about ASD otherwise you aren’t going to be aware or know much about it, so how could it be increased? Any ideas?
I personally think that if a famous person who is very highly well known comes out as autistic then it may get the ball rolling and people might ask themselves if they are too on the spectrum?
What do you all think?xx

  • I think that the defining feature of autism that convinced me that I was autistic was not all the communication difficulty stuff, it was the sensory problems. These tend not to be widely projected to the general public, but are much more easily demonstrated.

"Do you find a shirt unbearable to wear, then find one recently cut hair sticking out of the neck-band?

Do you cut out all the labels on clothes?

Does the flicker of fluorescent lighting make you nauseous?

Does any sudden loud noise make you jump into next week?

Does the feel of certain foods in your mouth or between your teeth when you bite revolt you unbearably?

Does touching certain types of surface or fabric make you a quivering wreck for the next few minutes?"

"If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you could be autistic."

  • That is one of the major issues I had in childhood regarding the feeling of clothing and touching particular things. I just thought it was only me. Smell was another thing. I think other things became more of an issue as I got older and the world did so many things at pace and there has been the necessity to learn so many new things.
