Increasing Autism Awareness?

What would you say would be the best way to increase Autism Awareness?
It seems to me that unless you have been diagnosed yourself or know someone with the condition then that is how you become educated about ASD otherwise you aren’t going to be aware or know much about it, so how could it be increased? Any ideas?
I personally think that if a famous person who is very highly well known comes out as autistic then it may get the ball rolling and people might ask themselves if they are too on the spectrum?
What do you all think?xx

  • When famous autistic people feature in documentaries about how autism affects them, it definitely raises awareness. I don’t know if it is necessarily always the best way to raise awareness. I think a multi pronged approach to raising awareness is best.

Joint statements issued by autism charities, which included the NAS, made the news when they refuted Robert Kennedy Jnr’s false claims about causes and cures for autism.

I do think there needs to be more information about the range and depth of strengths and difficulties each autistic person has. Many people think people who appear to them to function in society are only ‘a little bit autistic’ or as I heard recently ‘he has just a touch of autism’. Maybe we need more autistic people as a group to feature in a documentary to highlight our differences.
