Volunteering

I'm unsure if I can trust new employers, either for voluntary work or a job - in my previous job there was a new supervisor for my last year and she seemed to be nice and trustworthy but then she was really picky with me for the smallest things and it was getting too much (was breaking down at work). I don't know if i'll be able to trust a manager / supervisor in a job / voluntary work or open up to them as I have done in the past with other managers / supervisors

  • In my view, there is always one person who is 'not so nice' - that is why I usually leave. If they are the boss or supervisor, then it's probably better to leave. If you read their HR stats, you would probably find a high turnover of staff in these places! However, I wouldn't let this put you off - go for somewhere that has mostly long-term happy staff. 

    I've volunteered in everything from religious organisations [making tea usually], to beekeepers. Tea-making is a good way of sussing out a group; being among others without having to make small talk, or feeling pressured to stay if you decide to leave. I got tired of doing this in the end and now prefer my own company but I'm glad to have had these experiences.
