Not looking forward to extreme heat

It is just about reaching as hot as I can bear, towards the upper 20s. If we get extreme heat for a few days I get through it by thinking that it will be over soon. At the moment next week is predicted to be around 30 all week and often the prediction gets higher as it gets closer.

I like to be outside at least some of each day, but I am not sure there will be much that is bearable.

I am hoping they have got it wrong and it reduces sooner than Monday week.

  • 5th heatwave in the south (of England) next week.

'Heatwave' seems inappropriate now as it's the new normal.

I think that if the temperature that denotes a heatwave is based on averages it will need to be upped.

  • I know, back to 30+ from Sunday for a week or so. I was hoping for a bit longer break.

I am wondering how to keep my walls and house cooler. The walls are already painted white and I have had the curtains pulled for the last 6 weeks.

I am wondering if shutters or a shade or something would be more effective at stopping the sun shining through the windows. The heat still builds up behind the curtains.

For the walls, they need to get shaded. I think only plants can do this. I don't want ivy, but perhaps I can grow something else on it.

  • There are plastic coatings you can put over glass to reflect part of the heat. I think it's standard in new housing as both I and my chum in NI have it. It has the added advantage of blocking most of the view inside, unless you have a light on. They put it on conservatory glass roofs, as well.
