I felt so very strange

I was in tesco earlier and as I was going to get a basket there were two people looking at each other and talking, then I realised that they were both on thier phones and were nothing to do with each other, but I still felt like I'd walked in on an intimate moment or into someones living room, I felt really discombobulated for a minute.

It still feels strange to me to see people walking around and apparently talking to themselves, thats the sort of thing that would of got you cated away to the happy tablet academy when I was young.

  • I’ve experienced that too and it gave me a strange feeling too, as if I wasn’t where I should be.

I’ve noticed that people seem to be talking to family members, or neighbours, or friends, and are asking questions or receiving instructions to do with the shopping. I think it’s more noticeable recently because supermarkets are more frequently out of stock of usual items, so a telephone conversation is required to buy an alternative item.

  • I see that in supermarkets too and want to shout at them 'FFS write a list!'.

What really scares me are the numbers of people face down in thier phones whilst walking along the road, they just step out in front of me when I'd driving, I don't want to knock someone over, but I think there is a case for saying it's Darwinism in action.

I wonder if this sort of thing will stop or become less when the ban on social media for under 16's comes in?

It is very scary. People are oblivious to the dangers.

I think many young people will just get round the social media ban, in fact they might be more likely to be online on the hoof as they mightn’t want their parents or school teachers to know what they are doing.

  • That’s an important statistic and many people think that Starmer is rushing to implement the ban without due consideration to how young people might get round it.

I don’t think social media is a healthy place for any young person but experts suggest that other policies against the social media companies who allow harm could be more effective.
