What makes a tasty sandwich?

When out shopping, I sometimes buy a commercial sandwich, but they are mostly unsatisfying. They have little or no 'spread' to stop the bread getting soggy, rarely any pepper or salt, and the filling scrunched in the centre to make it look 'full.' How do you make a delicious sandwich at home?

  • Yes, a sandwich requires food to be placed (sandwiched) between two slices of bread.

I could never understand the open ‘sandwich’ thing either.

  • I think "open sandwich" is a misnomer too, I think they're common in Scandinavian countries as part of a smorgasbord, but they tend to have rye bread thats a lot less floppy than normal English bread.

  • I’ve had this argument at the local cafe, it’s a converted stables that also does evening meals / bar.

On the lunch menu is  ‘open sandwiches,’ I insisted that it’s egg on toast or cheese etc. I was informed,”no,” it’s an open sandwich, my understanding is The Earl of Sandwich placed food between two slices of bread and was able to carry on playing cards, not one piece of bread that requires a knife and fork!
