Benefits

I've applied for a benefit and have been told to get a fit note from my doctor's (I understand why and think I can get one)

My question really is

Has anyone else had to do this and what things should I say to my GP other than I can't work due to mental health and burnout

Parents
  • Well i was involved in a car crash where I my car skidden on ice and plunged down a banking. Fortunatley I wasn't too bad only a bruised ego and painful back and arm injuries. I was carted off to hospital for checks etc and spent a week in there. I had and still do sometimes have flash backs and my mental health is an issue but I recieve care from the mental health team who have been brillaint in supporting me. My GP wrote me a fit note for 6 weeks and when that expired I went back to see her still with bad back problems and I can't raise my right arm too far in the air etc. At the time I was working as a Care Assistant in a care home which in itself is a physically and mentally challenging job. My curent fit note ends on 1st August and I'll be going back for abother one. I decided that due to my age (66 in September) That I might as well take early retirment which I have done and my support worker assisted me to make a claim for UC. The DWP say that due to my savings being above £6000 I'm not entitled to any benefit but my support worker thinks I'll be entitled to PIP providing I keep getting fit notes and submitting them on my UC Journal. I hit Pension age on March 10th 2027. I've been Autistic for quite a few years now and it's only just come to light since the accident. At least I'm still alive and have a new life as a Retiree which is more than can be said for the car which sadly got written off.

  • You can always return to UC if your savings go below the level they need. You can only claim PIP if you are under retirement age. If you claim above the pension age for the 1st time they will put you on pension credit or attendance allowance.. You haven't got long left to be able to claim PIP.. You can claim PIP if your condition affects you after 6 months of being diagnosed with it if you state it.  You can also state conditions which are not diagnosed to. If you claim PIP these two guides may help.

  • Thanks. Yeah I will do when they do go below £6k. My Mental health support worker is helping me with it all.
