Regarding video game remakes/rereleases

I often find that if I own the original version of a game, I avoid getting it's remake/rerelease unless there's enough of a difference between the original and the new version to justify getting it. Recently I've been playing the MegaMan Star Force Legacy Collection, and I own the original DS version of MegaMan Star Force: Dragon version, so with the Legacy Collection I chose Pegasus version instead because then there's enough of a difference to what I already know to justify playing it.

However, when The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D came out, I didn't get them because I already own the original versions on Game Cube and aside from the graphics and quality of life changes, they're not really that different.

Funnily enough, if I've played the remake of a game before playing the original, I sometimes get the original just to see how it compares the remake experience, which is a bit weird considering it's never the other way round. I did that with Final Fantasy VII after playing Final Fantasy VII Remake, for example.

anyone else feel the same way about these kinds of things?

  • Yeah, I tend not to rebuy if I have the original, unless there's a reason as I'll just get out the old console to play it. We got mario kart 8 twice, as the switch version had the assists that let the kids play when they were small that wasn't in the Wii u version.

And yeah I'll get a remake version if I did't have the original, though I don't go hunting for the original afterwards.

I did get ocarina 3d, as that wasn't actually mine, it was my brother's, and his n64. It was cool, though as I'm afraid of heights, I had to close my eyes when jumping off things.

  • That's exactly how I feel about it.

I take it jumping off of Death Mountain in 3D was pretty scary though....

  • There's a super high platform in gerudo village, and I accidentally jumped off it and got real fear. Sometimes the 3d was too good! I think after that, I'd either close my eyes or turn the 3d off for those bit.

I did get Mario 3D World twice, as the switch one has Bowser's fury.

Do you count the upgrades they are doing for switch 2? I think that is a good way to do it, as you don't have to buy the whole game twice, just but the upgrade pack. We upgraded the kids Kirby and the forgotten lands as it has extra content (they played that together so much), and upgraded Tears of the Kingdom too.

  • Oh yeah, that was an excellent version, again as I didn't own the original I got that. (I have many fond memories of playing multiplayer dog fights on the N64 version -I sometimes got to be the 4th player if my brother and his friends were playing).
