How does your garden grow?

Mines doing well, rampant dandelions, I've been dea heading them so I hopefully dont' get more.

The blossom is out on the trees and my currants have loads of flowers, so do the strawberries and raspberries. The rhubarb has bolted, I'm not sure why, maybe the shock of going from winter to spring in a few days?

I planted 5 hyssop plants and a verbascum, the hyssop is good, all the creatures love it, it's perrenial and it can be used as part of a zataar herb mix and it's good for chest problems like COPD. I love plants that serve so many purposes.

I have buds on the hydrangeas already, maybe I'll have two lots of flowering?

I planted some romanesco cauliflowers and they've just started coming up, but I'm still waiting for the kallets I planted at the same time.

  • My garden has been and is a constant battle, the property was empty for a number of years, the vegetation really took hold. The house had become quite overgrown with ivy, it had got under the roof. I hopefully have got most of it removed, I’m not good with ladders.

One garden is an old English cottage garden, I’ve left it for this year to see what flowers, and record plant positions. There are quite a few old varieties.
I have cleared an area in another area and planted different lavenders, I really love the fragrance and different types.

The main lawn was very overgrown, I’ve got it back to nearly normal, big clumps of grass had taken over. Last week the lawnmower nearly had me, the bolt holding the blade on snapped and caused the blade to come flying past. I nearly ended up like Van Gogh, I wouldn’t have been able to wear glasses again.
There is a piece of woodland further down the garden, it’s a deep valley with natural stone sides, ferns seem to grow everywhere out of it, I’ve only been down there once in the winter, there is a stream and a well, it must have been accessible at one stage as the well fed the house. The valley has got a micro climate, the tree canopy doesn’t let much light in. Perhaps a job for next year as a lot of fallen trees block the path.

  • Sounds wonderful, Roy, I love the idea of your shady dell with the water and ferns. Raising the canopy of the trees makes a massive difference to what can grow in spring, things like wild garlic and of course bluebells and snow drops. Pile all the dead stuff up and create a dead hedge, it's one of the best things you can do for wildlife as it gives it somewhere to hide, to overwinter and avoid predators.

  • It’s strange you mention wild garlic, when I’m strimming I can often smell garlic, I can never workout which plant it comes from. I’ve found rosemary but no mint.
