Well that just takes the biscuit!

Those who know me, will know that I have a terrible relationship with tech, things randomly crash or dont' work or I can't remember how to do it. I thought I'd have a look at co-pilot to see what everyones raving about, so I clicked on it and nothing happened, nothing at all.

DId I do something wrong or has Ai decided I'm a danger to it?

  • If its any consolation, I have no idea what co-pilot is.

  • I had another go today and actually managed to get co-pilot loaded and working, whether I'll be able to do it again is another matter....

  • Well done for trying!! I think we all realize how hard this issue is for you. It is very brave to try again in these circumstances.

  • You’re welcome.

According to the information, they do individual sessions for people in their own homes  (if that is what you want), as well as other group sessions around the country.

I really hope somebody knowledgeable and sympathetic to your specific needs can help you.

  • It could be, but if its anything like the woman in the library who did this stuff, then it wouldn't work, not only was she one of the most autistic unfriendly people I've ever met, she didn't seem to know what it was, or why any learning difficulty would be a problem. But the sessions are in the library where there are old fashioned overhead lights, I can't use screens with them as I can see the screen flicker and get a 3 day migraine, where I can't see, properly, eat or do anything. Theres nowhere else to go i the library with not artificial light, not that she thought it was a problem.

But I'll give it another go and see if this lot are any different. Thanks

I saw that, but as the UK government is claiming that it is funding free digital training for people in all areas, I thought of you and emailed the organisation in the link to ask if they could help a person in your area of north Wales. They said that if the person concerned could fill in the form they would send it to their trainer to get the person help. I didn’t mention this forum or pass on details about you and the specific difficulties you have mentioned here or in your other posts.

    Might be worth a try?

  • Thanks ArchaeC, I just looked and they don't do north wales, only a couple of places in the south

  • CatWoman, this organisation offers free IT support to people in their own homes, including those in your area of Wales. The first link gives information about the organisation, the second is the form to request support.

  • I'm not sure there is anything to suggest, but thanks for trying

  • I'm not sure what else to suggest then, unless somewhere does a really basic computer without all the 'fancy' things

  • I'm not sure I understand any of them when talking about computers if I'm honest. They might ask me what I use it for and I tell them, they seem amazed that my usage is so limited, then they ask me what I'd like to use it for, I might make the odd suggestion and thats where it gets complicated. Maybe I can't get what I'd like in the browser I use so I'd have to spend ages learning to use a new browser before I could learn to use the thing I might like to try. Maybe my computer won't run it as its to old, maybe I need to remove the things that I actually want like adblocks and pop up blocks, to do that just for one site is unweildy and a pain inthe bum to keep putting on and off or having to take it off my computer altogether and then reinstall it so as I can read the newspaper uninterupted.

Most of all I believe that technology, is there to make life easier not more difficult and so much tech makes false promises, its not easier, it funnels you into things you don't want at the expense of things you do want.

  • A young member of our family is in his second year at Cambridge University and they use the term “Machine Learning” instead of AI. He also moderates a Reddit group on coding and again Machine Learning is the term used to encompass AI.

AI is often spoken of in the media as an existential threat to humanity but like any tool (machine) it can be used for good and bad (depending on your viewpoint). He has developed an app using Machine Learning to spot a particular disease in bees whilst the hive community can be still saved. It has been made freely and globally accessible, clearly helping bees is a positive for people and the planet. Given the huge amount of data required and the incredible speed it must be processed in Machine Learning is the only way the app could be developed and on connecting to a simple camera at the hive approach is the software which processes the vast number of images.

Personally I do understand the existential threat but see this not as computers going rogue and killing their creators, rather by the way it gives “bad actors”, to use a news term, to bring down power grids, financial systems, hospitals, transportation etc etc. Then add in the accuracy and speed with which it processes data, it is giving the insurance industry such huge insights into the statistics of risk that more and more properties, people, businesses will become uninsurable. Its worth checking out the UK government’s Flood-Re initiative to glean more understanding.

  • Maybe just let one person do the explaining? (The one you understand more of course)

  • If only it were that easy! Part of the problem is that I don't know what's out there that I could use, another part of the problem is what one person tells me the rest disagree with and tell me something else and I either end up feeling like a bone between two dogs, or that I'm sat in the middle of people with megaphones shouting different things at me. I think one of the worst questions I get asked is 'why do I want to that?.'

  • maybe try explaining what you do understand then what you would like to know how to do - say to them to keep things simple, and if needs be write down how to do things, so you have step by step instructions to follow

  • It's probably just me and my technoklutzness, all sort of things go wrong, I can type in a search and nothing comes up or I get more airfryers advertised at me, for some reason the internet seems very concerned that I don't have one. Others can type in the exact same search and get loads of relevant stuff and no airfryers.

At least I can walk past most computers and other tech stuff without them going wrong, it used to be that if I stood to near a pooter it would crash. The list of stuf I've crashed is long, boring and many find it unbelieveable. At uni I wasn't allowed to have anything with "buttons" like tv remotes, as it would just stop working or go somewhere weird.

I think one of the reasons why my family sort of put off helping me with tech stuff, is not knowing where to start, I don't think they can make the leap from where I stop to where I'd need to be to use even the most basic modern stuff. I think people can also find it fun that I'm so crap and so many weird things happen that they just prefer not to interfere, maybe they're afraid they'll catch whatever I've got?

  • aybe, if or when one of my family comes down for long enough, we can sort something out

Hope you can get it sorted out Slight smile

I would try to help on here but I need to be able to see screens etc whilst helping,

  • I think this will be another thing to go in the "too complicated box". Maybe, if or when one of my family comes down for long enough, we can sort something out, with regards to phones, AI and other stuff. My knowlege is very very basic and most people start at a level thats way over my head.

I think stuff like this just not doing anything is one of the reasons I find tech so difficult, it either does nothing, or to much and I don't know how to stop it or undo it. I supose the best thing is that I've not managed to get on it, it hasn't made changes and totally messed things up. I'm still finding things from the last time I allowed someone to use my pooter, that I dont' know why they're there or where stuff of mine is.
