PIP award running out/renewal

Does anyone here know what happens when a Personal Independence Payment award reaches the end date of the award? My son’s PIP runs out really soon and we’ve heard nothing from them about renewing it. Do they contact you by letter to say you need to renew? Or do they phone you? Or do they expect you to contact them to renew it?
Also - what is the renewal process? What do they do?

We are feeling really stressed about it - as we don’t know what will happen, or if maybe a letter has got lost in the post or something. We’re worried his payments will just stop when he reaches the end date of the award. It’s my son’s only financial support as he’s still involved in education (online tutoring) so it’s vital for him.
I realise I should probably just phone them and ask but I have massive anxiety about phoning anyone official like that, and my son can’t phone them because he’s even more anxious than I am and has Selective Mutism. We both worry so much about getting things wrong and dealing with ‘official’ people, and financial things.
Has anyone else been through this recently? Had their PIP award end - and go past the end date without hearing anything from anyone?

I would so appreciate anyone sharing their experience of this if they can. Thanks.

  • Depending on the length of the original award, he might need to make a new claim. The information below explains more.

I suggest checking his original award letter first, and working from there - perhaps with help from Citizens Advice and/or reference to support services like Benefits and Work and Turn2Us, if needed.

    The Government says:

"The letter you got when your Personal Independence Payment (PIP) was approved will tell you when your claim will end and if it will be reviewed."

    https://www.gov.uk/pip/when-your-pip-claim-is-reviewed

    According to Benefits and Work:

"Who gets a pip review and when?

Whether and when you get a review depends on the length of your award

    - Fixed term with no review – less than 2 years.
    - Fixed term with review – 2 years and over. The DWP will decide on the date when your award will be reviewed.
    - Ongoing award – no end date but a light-touch review after 10 years."

And also, per Benefits and Work:

"If your PIP award is due to end at 2 years or less, it won’t normally be reviewed. Instead, the DWP usually write to you roughly 3 months before the end date of your award, reminding you to make a new claim.

You should make a new claim before your PIP award ends, as it can take a considerable time to decide on your claim. You can do this up to 6 months before your award ends."

  • Thanks Bunny. I think I’m going to have to pluck up the courage to phone them. It makes me feel physically sick to have to do this though - both me and my son dread any contact with official services of any kind. So intimidating.

  • Just wishing you the best with this, I get that feeling too, lots of strength and good vibes for you! You can do this! Star2

  • Well done for calling, I'm fortunate that my husband is okay with making the calls, I really know where you are coming from!

I'm really glad you got a bit more time and at least know when you are going to receive a letter now, so that's good to know. But yeah I don't think it's fair to make people live with the constant stress of waiting and applying and not knowing, it should at least be longer (5 years) so you can have a break from the stress!

For now I hope you can relax a bit at least! RainbowSunny
