PIP award running out/renewal

Does anyone here know what happens when a Personal Independence Payment award reaches the end date of the award? My son’s PIP runs out really soon and we’ve heard nothing from them about renewing it. Do they contact you by letter to say you need to renew? Or do they phone you? Or do they expect you to contact them to renew it?
Also - what is the renewal process? What do they do?

We are feeling really stressed about it - as we don’t know what will happen, or if maybe a letter has got lost in the post or something. We’re worried his payments will just stop when he reaches the end date of the award. It’s my son’s only financial support as he’s still involved in education (online tutoring) so it’s vital for him.
I realise I should probably just phone them and ask but I have massive anxiety about phoning anyone official like that, and my son can’t phone them because he’s even more anxious than I am and has Selective Mutism. We both worry so much about getting things wrong and dealing with ‘official’ people, and financial things.
Has anyone else been through this recently? Had their PIP award end - and go past the end date without hearing anything from anyone?

I would so appreciate anyone sharing their experience of this if they can. Thanks.
