Games that are good for autistics and other nuerodivergents

This is just an idea I've been thinking about for a long time, but I often feel like there are video games that innately appeal to autistics and other nuerodivergents due to the gameplay providing a form of positive mental stimulation to certain synapses relating to puzzling, logic, or just fun. Mostly RPGs and perhaps a couple fighting games I feel fall into these categories. I also just love it when games have hidden mechanics or secret little tricks you can use (I.E. Super Smash Bros. Melee with L-Cancelling and Wave Dashing) which I think can be attributed to my autism.

  • Super Street Fighter IV 3D is awesome. I usually play as Akuma because LP LP > LK HP (if you know, you know)

  • Yeah, games that have repetitive mechanics often do make for good stims.

I usually main MegaMan because his playstyle is pretty rigid; projectile spam far away opponents, then punish anyone who gets too close with a short range attack (his melee attacks have great knockback!) And his Final Smash is just the coolest, let's not beat around the bush

  • I totally second what you say about Smash Bros. I think the repetitiveness of that game makes for a good stim.

I also just love it when games have hidden mechanics or secret little tricks you can use

My main on Smash 4 and Smash Ultimate is Zelda because in those games you can reconfigure the controller to button jump. In other words, turn off the function to jump when you push the stick up. That means you can go crazy with the control stick without accidentally jumping when you are controlling her Farore’s Wind attack. I believe that once you do that, she goes from being a bottom tier character to a solid upper-mid tier character.

  • Hi everyone, I have a Nintendo 3ds XL which I bought second hand on ebay. I have got some classic for it which I liked years ago. I particularly play Luxor and Bejeweled which are puzzle games. I have Street fighter 2 which one of my brothers had and like being Chun Li on that. Some games like Tetris made me feel dizzy when I was growing up. I liked playing Super Tennis to when I was younger

  • It's still available for 2 euro in shop with toys. I also used to have some numeric games on my phone and other analytical. But then it wore off and I stopped playing anything.

  • One of my favourite games on my Switch is MegaMan X Legacy Collection. I find the repetitive action of dashing, jumping and wall kicking to be a good stim. Also, THE MUSIC.

The MegaMan series in general isn't exactly beginner friendly though, but there is a "Rookie Hunter Mode" that makes things easier if you're a beginner

  • Wow, that's super nostalgic! I remember having something like that back when I was a kid!

  • Yeah stardew valley I’ve heard that mentioned before it does seem to be popular.

  • I bought this one yesterday.  I love it, especially tetris. I don't need colorful screen effects etc. The b/w monochromatic screen is best, sounds off and fun.

  • Oh this is a great thread.

I've recently bought a second hand Nintendo switch. I’m new to gaming so I bought Super Mario cart to go with it.

I’ve tried to research a bit more about the games but I still can’t come up with a definitive answer. The games are so expensive even second hand so some ideas would be good.Blush

  • I played Split Fiction with my brother - it was a easy story line to follow, clear where to go, not too many buttons to press but it has elements of puzzles and some fighting involved! (Its good because if one of you is struggling to get somewhere when running to and from places, it teleports you too where the other person is!)

I loved playing, I wish they did a game similar but for one player I'd give it a go!

Stardew Valley is another game which is good, as you can take your time doing things and don't have to rush to complete it!

I find Minecraft good for having fun and creating different areas to decorate etc - I'm not too keen on the monster side but my brother is okay with it in peaceful or easy (I find easy difficult for monsters haha)
