New book by autistic novelist

I just came across an interesting article in The Guardian. Woody Brown is a non-speaking autistic person whose debut novel, Upward Bound, is set in an adult day care centre in southern California. Sounds like a good read, so I've made a note to get hold of copy when it is published next month.

  • That does sound like a gem. Woody Brown... yeah, he's the real deal. First non-speaking autistic person to graduate UCLA, writes via letterboard, and now this debut? Set in a day care for disabled adults in sunny California - feels raw, hopeful, and way overdue.

The Guardian piece you spotted? Spot-on - it's from today, actually. They call him "astonishing," and honestly? The cover's gorgeous - simple yellow, that doodled knot of yarn... like untangling thoughts.

Here's the book jacket - bright, quirky, perfect for a story about breaking free:

Upward Bound by Woody Brown: 9780593979976 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books

And Woody himself - warm smile, standing by an old steam train. Looks like someone who's climbed way more than mountains:

Out March 31, 2026 - US first, then UK in April. Pre-order's live on Penguin Random House or Guardian Bookshop if you're keen.

If you grab it, tell me how it lands? I bet it'll hit close to home.
