poetry does it help with thought process

Ambient Voices,Quiet noises written by Oceancloud

hearing is acute in the Aspergers frame of mind

Strangers touching you,crowds,very unkind

Ambient voices quiet noises drown out yourself

Detrimental to your well being and your good health

Its not something to be scared of, but something to be studied and understood

We are the future, the strange ones, the rude

WE speak our mind without thought or consequence

We speak reason, our computer brains calculating sense

We are the distant ones in the corner,we are so afraid of our shadows we retreat

we run,we flee, rather than concide defeat

We are the routine, we think too much

causing mental organized chaos, as such

WE are special cant you see, we tell the truth, we see three steps ahead

we should run the world, a world of intelligent peace

its our statement decree, our long term lease

dedicated to every special soul with aspergers and autism

I get that at times, and even had it said on this website too.  It may be perfectly normal as such but to me I don't know how always to process it in me.

Poetry does help me a little but I go the other way in that if something negative been happing I have asked some one to give me a theme totally seperate and I escape through poetry.

  • It's certainly helped my thought processes.  I've been writing for a long time, initially quite 'unpoetic', but studying the likes of Dylan Thomas (and Bob Dylan ;) ) has helped me understand metaphor etc.

I didn't get a diagnosis until I was 40, and it took another ten years for it to occur to me to write an AS poem.  Here's the last few lines:

My life is viscous, but not treacle-sweet
It's hot tar.  Wet clay.  Quicksand.
Every interaction's up an escalator going down
    A treadmill running backwards
    A life-sized game of Snakes & Snakes
Every now and then I throw a double six.  Good times.
But mostly I just have Aspergers, and nothing rhymes.

  • Thank you for your poem. I just ready it and I felt better about myself and not so alone. I like to write because I can say what is really going on. Do you ever get people saying 'oh but that is perfectly normal' it makes me angry and I feel misunderstood, alone. I would like to keep in touch because I am convinced other people just cant understand. Hope to hear from you again. (Removed by Mod)

That was excellent! Thanks for sharing! It reminds me very much of this poem by Mikhail Lermontov whom I strongly suspect to be also of our tribe:

    First of January

His  sketchbooks of doodles are crowded, compulsively drawn: figures, animals, people, with no space between them. Once, when an admirer brought some poems of his own to read to him, and a jar of pickled cucumbers as a present, Lermontov stuffed some of the cucumbers into his mouth, others into his pocket for later, and simply walked away while the other chap was still reading aloud… This sort of thing got him into trouble. He was killed in a duel for persistently teasing a friend about his flashy clothes, and then, when he arrived at the duel site, and made to fire into the air, saying: "I'm not going to fire at that idiot!"
