Now For Something "Random" - Potato Salad - Around The World

This time of year my thoughts return toward the quest for Potato Salad recipe inspiration - with myriad international specialities.

Why?

It can contribute variety to a pack lunch without sandwiches out on a walk.

The BBC Food website is often quite a rich source of inspiration:

I quite like some of the Danish versions made tangy by the inclusion of some crème fraîche or soured cream:

If cooking for a picnic crowd around the Spring Equinox - Salad Olivieh comes to mind - incorporating chicken, hard boiled eggs, vegetables and pickles:

If you prefer dishes with lighter dressing / vinaigrette - there are many with which to experiment:

If Caribbean, or South Asian influences have caught your attention - there are potato salads to pack some piquancy punch too:

Keralan cuisine, vibrant with coconut, spices and aromatic ingredients - is hard to beat:

When a more moderate carbohydrate option is ideal, think Rainbow Salad - including sweet potato and vegetables:

For outdoor events in hot Sumner temperatures - vegan recipes are likely to be more fail safe (under the ingredients list you can toggle between US / metric measurements):

Hot days work well too with the Sicilian red onion, cherry tomato and black olive - Insalata Pantesca:

One of my "go-to" versions is the San Francisco style potato salad - aka Herman's Salad - inspired and made famous by Herman’s Delicatessen - which until the 1970's was on Geary Street in San Francisco.

What made that recipe popular was a creamy, tangy, white-coloured salad - featuring thinly-sliced boiled potatoes, mayonnaise, grated carrots, vinegar and fresh parsley.

It is also known for lacking the heavy mustard, or rich eggs of some recipes - instead, focusing on a silky, simple, slightly sweet flavour profile:

  • or, by taking over to share with someone you haven't seen for a while?
