Anyone get embarrassed over tipping eg hairdressers, waiters, taxi drivers?

There are many reasons I dislike the habit of tipping:

1. these people earn salaries and not everyone in all jobs expects to be tipped - I can't understand how this came about

2. I often don't have enough and feel mean if I give a small tip, not knowing how much is appropriate anyway

3. I find it embarrassing - a bit demeaning on both sides

4. the only person I give a tip last year was the postman, and last Christmas I left a note that as I'm retired it would be the last

What do you think? What is the history of tipping? Should it be banned? Is there a way of getting around the embarrassment?

  • I do not tip for a variety of reasons. I am assuming from this post you are also from UK. As you say they get a salary, so why should I. I don't get tips for my job, as many others don't. If someone like a nurse doesn't get a tip then why should a waitress? I had no idea people tipped their postman, that is new to me. I have no idea who my postman is or whether it's even the same person each time. I would probably find it embarrassing too. I don't know other people my age that do tip so I think it's dying a bit of a death.  Another reason I don't tip is that the person you are giving it to often doesn't get to keep it, at least in restaurants etc. It gets out in a pot and divided out equally. Whilst I understand the thought process behind this, for me tipping should only be for outstanding service and therefore the person who earned the tip should keep the tip.

I understand that in America it is very different. Jobs like waiters and waitresses are very low paid and they rely on tips for their income. This is fair enough. There it is very strict that you tip and is frowned upon if you don't. I wouldn't mind as much if I knew it was going to really affect someone's pay. I don't think it's right that their pay should be so low though.
