Players cost millions. There is a massive toll to the planet in air miles. It is far too expensive for many fans to attend. It costs £millions in insurance and policing. I got the following idea after watching The Great Big Tiny Design on channel 4. Why not replace major events with miniature versions?
For example, replace the World Cup with subbuteo, using machines like those used in robotic surgery? You could use blow football, but I think subbuteo is more classy, also more hygienic. No one needs to leave their country or even their home. Instead of attending, each fan would pay a nominal amount to paint a model, to be placed in a mock stadium in the country selected by the traditional selection process. Prizes would still be awarded by FIFA and games monitored by a referee and linesmen using traditional rules. You could offer prizes for best painted model, best team turnout etc. Think of the huge business potential for the hospitality sector, excited crowds watching remotely in their own city or town. £millions saved on 'live' events could be better spent on medical equipment or relieving the social ills of our time. Think of saving many potentially life-changing player injuries!
Do you think this will catch on? Would David Beckham lend his support? Could this be rolled out to other events like Wimbledon, The Ashes, The Olympics? I bet you can hardly wait for these exciting changes to take place! What are your ideas for liliputian public events?
