Changing the Subject?

Would you say that changing the subject to completely something random is part of the "Failure of Normal Back- and- Forth Conversation" autistic trait or is it more silence and no reply?

I've had a look at previous posts and I can't find it mentioned anywhere else but just wondered what your thoughts were?

Let me know

Many Thanks

  • Reading some of the other replies. I just want to expand on some of my original response to this.

I think there are different degrees of changing the subject. Yes neurotypical (as well as some neurodivergent) people will often take conversations off on a tangent when there is a natural lull or something that in their head relates  or is important in that moment.

However, I think there is a difference with some neurodivergent people. And that is changing the subject at a point that would cause confusion to the other person. For example, if they were asked a question and rather than responding started talking about something completely different. Or always changing the subject of a conversation back to the same topic e.g. a special interest. I think it is when it is to this higher degree than it can full under failure of normal back and forth conversation as there isn't really any true back and forth. Whilst neurotypical people may change the subject, they will also engage in a high level of back and forth conversation.
