Regime change in Venezuela

Trump has bombed and captured Venezuela and taken it's president to America to stand trial for frug smuggling or terrorism or something like that. He says America is going to be running the country from now until a new government can be elected. One friendly to the USA no doubt.

I think this is all about oil personally and havving control of Venezuela's huge mineral resources, for someone who didn't want to have any more foreign adventures Trump seems to be pretty gung-ho about meddling in other countries. I wonder if Iran will be next? He's made threatening noises before and now that the Iranian people are protesting against their government I wonder if he'll be able to resist?

Does the world need more conflict on another continent? I don't think so, I think this will destabilise the world even more, not that I support Maduro and his cronies, but I think an outright attack like this is dangerous, I wonder how the rest of South America is feeling about it, do they feel any safer or more in danger?

Both Venezuela and Iran are pally with Russia, could this all be a way of getting at Putin and what will his reaction be to some of his allies being taken over by the USA? Looks like 2026 has got off with the wrong sort of bangs.

  • Last night my mother in law - a Trump supporter - texted my wife “Why does Trump want Greenland?” Then apologized because she meant to Google that.

Even his followers have no idea why he is going for Greenland lol

  • I burst out laughing at that.

  • I think someone needs to tell Trump to get out of the pram and pick all his toys up!

There seems to b quite a bit of dissent in the USA, at high levels about Trumps need for Greenland, I think it might be a step to far for many in government who worry about the possible end of NATO and the general trustworthyness of America under Trump.

Iran seems to have played him at his own game and done just enough to stop him bombing them and appearing as an aggressor whilst carrying on regardless of international opinion. Why he or anyone else for that matter thought that threatening then waiting was a good idea when very recent history has shown the opposite I don't know. Not that I was in favour of America or anyone else interfering in Iran, I think it would be to destabilising and the Iranian people need to do themselves. There are other options to support the Iranian people, such as shutting off diplomatic ties and keeping Starlink open so as information can get in and out.

  • My opinion on that? If Trump kept his trap shut, Iran would have a harder time making such bold claims.

I agree, and I wish he’d keep it shut permanently.

Trump’s rhetoric definitely inflamed tensions because Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused him of inciting violence. Khamenei blamed the US for the unrest and casualties and the Iranian government has been justifying their actions against the ‘foreign instigated protests’. At the same time, it was the Iranian government’s own choice to suppress dissent in the way they did. Although Trump’s actions have given hope to protestors in Iran, many Iranians think his interference could undermine genuine support for reform.

  • I agree Prof, I think they're rubbing his nose in it now, but they need to be careful about what they say as Trumps so unpredicatable he may attack in a fit of pique.

Trumps announced tariffs on the UK, France, Germany, Finalnd, The Netherlands, Norway and Denmark for not agreeing with him on Greenland, they will start on 1st Feb, so still a couple of weeks for him to climb down. I just hope that the European countries and the UK don't give in to him.

I’ve read that Iran is saying the death toll was due to Trump saying that America would attack. Apparently they are claiming terrorists were killing Iranians in order to force America into intervening.
