What's your favourite, cheapest home-made meal?

In these economically tight times.... Mine is 1/2 tin of Tesco Stockwell beans [28p a tin] + 1 slice of Tesco white toastie [0.75p loaf] = 14p + 5p = 19p.

Sometimes I push the boat out and eat 2 slices Joy.

  • I love porridge in the morning - I even like it just made with water if I have no milk, and then a little runny honey to sweeten it. I also love pasta and pesto - with onion and garlic and some cheese - and whatever vegetables I have available. A simple and cheap desert I like is a banana baked in the oven with a little honey and cinnamon, or a little bit of chocolate put on before you bake it - it only takes 15 mins in the oven but it’s so lovely.
Like you I love beans on toast (with a little grated cheese on top) but I realised some years ago that tomato triggers my arthritis- so I can’t eat tomato(or potato) any more - I really miss them. I used to love having a thinly sliced tomato on hot buttered toast - so fresh and delicious. Also a jacket potato with butter and cheese. But I can’t have these things anymore. Thankfully there are many good alternatives:)

  • I love all those things! Porridge is so versatile - nice with cinnamon and ginger, also chopped up stem ginger. Sad about you can't eat potato - another favourite is instant mash with grated cheese. Could you eat polenta instead of potato?

That sounds yummy - I'll try that today.

  • I’ve never had much luck with making polenta that tastes good to me. I sometimes make a mash with a mixture of celeriac and butternut squash with cheese - but it can’t compete with ‘regular’ potato imho. Roast potato, chips, jacket potato - I used to adore them all! But everytime I’ve tried going back to potato or tomato to ‘test’ my reaction I’ve had the same problem: incredibly itch skin and sore joints. So I just accept I can’t have them. My eldest son has a dairy allergy - I think I’d find that even harder as cheese is an absolute favourite food for me.
